Gear Review: BioLite Solo Prep Kit

By Alex Comstock

Recently I got the chance to review a few products from BioLite Energy, and let me tell you, this kit of products is pretty cool. Coming from a hunter’s perspective, I’ve found these products to not only be beneficial for being outdoors, but they’re also great to keep in your home in case of an emergency. With that said, let’s jump into what these products are, how they perform, and how you can put them to use.

BioLite Solo Kit

BioLite launched a September preparedness month, which included multiple kits (all kits linked at the end of the blog post). What I tested out specifically was their solo kit. This kit consisted of their Headlamp 330, Light diffusing stuffsack, sunlight, charge 20 and lifestraw classic. Like I mentioned at the top of this blog post, what I particularly love about these products is they can double as being useful around the house and in the field hunting.

Headlamp 330: The headlamp is a 330 lumen handsfree light, is quite bright and has multiple setting. What I especially like about this light is a couple things. First of all, it’s really light and has a unique design with the battery back on the back on the headband. Secondly, I love that it has multiple settings, including a red light, which I’ve already used to get into the treestand. When it comes to deer hunting, having the option of having a bright light is great, especially when tracking a deer that you’ve shot and then having the red light to access your stands without using a bright light is equally as useful.

Light Diffusing Stuffsack: The stuffsack is meant to almost create a lantern type of feel. You put the headlamp into the sack, and it creates a widespread beam of light, allowing you to see in a room or wide area. After messing around with this just in the house, I know I will be bringing this with me on any type of hunting trip where I’ll be staying in a tent. If you are a backwoods hunter, and tent often, this is great addition to have. Instead of propping up your phone light or headlamp, set this up, and you’ll light up your tent instantly.

Sunlight: The sunlight is a small 100 lumen light that props up via its built in stand. When it comes to being included in the prep kit, they are great as they more or less replace candles. They’re also great to have in your pack, because having a light like this can always come in handy during a hunting trip.

Charge 20: The charge 20 is far and away my favorite piece from this kit. This is a 5200mAH battery to get multiple cell phones charges and is also great to charge your headlamp. The charge 20 is small and I’ve already found myself using it again and again. When it comes to deer hunting specifically, I can leave it in my backpack, and when my phone is getting low on battery, plug it in and not have to worry about my phone dying. Though when in the stand, you probably don’t want to be on your phone too much, we all know it just doesn’t happen. Our phone can be important for various reasons, from checking the weather to being able to call your buddy if you knock a buck down. Having the charge 20 with you will assure your phone never dies while on stand.

Lifestraw Classic: This tool is a straw that filters water, as it removes bacteria, parasites and microplastics, allowing you to drink from any water. It’s light, weighing only 2 ounces and is long lasting, with you being able to filter 1,000 gallons of water before needing to pick up a new one. This obviously can be an invaluable tool for many situations, most notably though for hunting in the backcountry. Find any stream, lake, river or pond and you can get a clean drink of water.

Final Thoughts

This kit is being marketed and directed towards being a preparedness kit, which totally makes sense. If you ever have a power outage because of a bad storm, this tools can surely help you. But they don’t just help in that scenario. I was able to get my hands on these products, test them and see how they could also help hunters, and I firmly believe I will minimally have most of these in my truck on hunting trips, and will always have the charge 20 and headlamp in my pack. This kit can help not only the backcountry hunter, but the everyday whitetail hunter as well and I’d recommend giving them a look.
