Yesterday was a special day for me. I went in to check a few trail cameras on my best property with hopes of finding my number one buck from last year whom I call "Kobe". I wanted to give these cameras at least a month before checking them, as I didn't get them out until July 15th. I'm aiming to be very sensitive on this certain property, and just wanted to confirm that Kobe was back. But with the conditions yesterday being ideal to check trail cameras in a delicate area, I opted to take advantage of them, and boy am I glad I did.

Deer hunting public land can be a bear of a challenge to tackle. There are unique hurdles that present themselves when hunting any public land, but if you're willing to put in the work, the reward can be just as great as hunting a pristine piece of privately managed land. The ability to think outside the box, and hunt differently can go a long ways.

Let's say that this weekend you want to go out and either find new hunting property or scout a new piece of hunting land that you just found. You don't just hop in the vehicle and head out with nothing right? This past weekend, I found a couple of new spots to hunt, and then a few days ago, I went and did a quick scout, and hung a few trail cameras. Whenever I do this, I find a few tools particularly useful to help me hopefully be more successful.

All across america, deer hunters alike are hanging tree stands this time of the year. Hang on stands, ladder stands, prepping climber stand trees, you name it - it's going up. Part of deer hunting that I love so much is how we can all do things differently, use different gear, or have different opinions on certain things all in search of mainly the same goal - to successfully hunt deer.

If there's one thing that can get a deer hunter's blood pumping in the summer, it's velvet bucks. Seeing bucks in the summer, watching them, and observing them from a distance, whether it be from your vehicle or sitting on the edge of a secluded bean field can be addicting. But what can be learned through doing this? Are there more effective ways to do it than you might think? Is there a true point to it besides just getting excited? Over the past few years, I've spent a lot of time behind glass searching for velvet bucks, and there are some important factors I've taken away from doing it.

It's easy to fall into a routine right? No matter what facet of life, it can be hard to break that routine, even if it doesn't work. When it comes to deer hunting, if you truly want to be successful harvesting mature bucks, the mentality of sitting the same tree year in and year out might not always work out as you'd like. Not to say there isn't that special tree that could produce every year at the right time, but by becoming a mobile hunter, you could be setting yourself up for elevated success.
In so many circumstances, it appears to me that deer hunters can easily fall into a pattern that leads them down the same road each and every season. You find yourself doing the same exact thing, putting trail cameras on the same tree, hunting the same stand, walking in footsteps from last year, and the cycle goes on. My challenge to you is this: Do something new this year!
