This blog post is by no means meant to bring you down in any way possible. But there's something I wanted to bring to your attention and talk about, and that revolves around targeting a specific buck. In just what I've seen, I see a lot of people that hunt a certain buck. Trail cameras play a large role with this, as you can more or less get to know a deer without ever seeing him. There's a lot talked about when it comes to this topic, but there's one thing in particular that I wanted to touch on.

For the deer hunter that pursues mature bucks, your opportunities are few are far between. Think about how many times a season you lay eyes on a mature buck, but even better yet, how many of those chances actually are within bow range? And of those chances, how many give you the ability to actually draw your bow back? And finally, of those encounters, how many times do you actually release an arrow? Yeah not often.

Recently, our friends Adam Crews from Chase The Mountain and Mike Higman from Hunting Gear Deals started a new series with their Down South Hunting Podcast comparing two vastly different types of scent control. The guys interviewed two very successful deer hunters, Dan Infalt and John Eberhart, who have completely different views on scent control, and how to use it when it comes to hunting mature bucks.

It was a steamy morning in southern Louisiana. Projected highs were in the mid 90s and the humidity was hovering around 85%, yet that still wasn’t enough to keep me home. Without a doubt, my scouting mission would provide many encounters with snakes, ticks, and horseflies the size of actual horses. But the trail cameras I had hung a month prior were calling my name. After all, it was mid-August, and it was time to get my hit list ready. With great anticipation, I set off for the nearly three mile hike.

I'm not sure how much I slept exactly last night. There was a little something on my mind, and it may have something to do with deer season... Oh that's right, it was the night before opening day! This afternoon, I will find myself perched in a tree, anxiously waiting to see my first deer of the year from a treestand.

Growing up hunting the highly pressured state of Michigan, I pounded into my head that in order to kill big deer, I had to hunt from a tree. Not only that, it had to be the right tree in the perfect location and hung at least 20-25 feet off the surface of the Earth, or why even bother?

Yesterday was a special day for me. I went in to check a few trail cameras on my best property with hopes of finding my number one buck from last year whom I call "Kobe". I wanted to give these cameras at least a month before checking them, as I didn't get them out until July 15th. I'm aiming to be very sensitive on this certain property, and just wanted to confirm that Kobe was back. But with the conditions yesterday being ideal to check trail cameras in a delicate area, I opted to take advantage of them, and boy am I glad I did.

All across america, deer hunters alike are hanging tree stands this time of the year. Hang on stands, ladder stands, prepping climber stand trees, you name it - it's going up. Part of deer hunting that I love so much is how we can all do things differently, use different gear, or have different opinions on certain things all in search of mainly the same goal - to successfully hunt deer.
